Connecting output of chain function to element within plugin

New to gstreamer so I am not sure this is possible but I think it should be.

 

I want to create a plugin that modifies an incoming buffer (via chain function), sends that buffer to a child element via internal pad (I guess) and then the output of the element gets connected to the plugin's src pad.

 

Any example of how to do this?
