It seems the From field in the email notifications has a wrong
charset, or is it just me?

I believe it needs to be encoded (I guess you can only have ASCII in header
fields), compare to a regular mail:

From: Sebastian =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Dr=F6ge?= <[hidden email]>
