Significance of pt= on the pipe line

I see pt=99 and pt=97 pt=96 on the command line examples. Are these numbers arbitrary?

All payload type (pt) below 96 are predefined by rtp standards. 96 and more are dynamically allocated. The signalling of the type is application dependant (WebRTC, sip, rtsp etc.)

What is the significance?

They are used in the differentiation of the RTP packets.
