The assrender plugin is mostly non-functional and accordingly, I have filed bugs against it.

Bug 575878 – assrender searches entire current working directory when
searching for fonts to use

Bug 575879 – assrender doesn't support fonts embedded in MKV files


Both of these bugs prevent assrender from having any practical use when
loading in a large directory or even be able to properly read an MKV file.

That's why it's in gst-plugins-bad. Patches are welcome, patience is a
virtue etc.
