Word of caution on using mailing lists

Edward Hervey-2
To all newcomers to this mailing-list,

Whenever you reply to mails by people helping you, do *NOT* send them
mails in private, but to the whole mailing-list. There's two reasons to
that:
  * Your discussion will be lost to everybody (no longer public to the
whole mailing list),
  * People helping you are doing it in their free time and they reply
when they can. Forcing your issues to one particular individual can
become very irritating.

It's really easy : Just hit the 'Reply-to-all' button in your mail
client.

  Thankyou

   Edward

can't the mailing list be configured so that the "Reply-To:" header is
filled with the mailing list address ?
that would solve the issue for most (if not all) mailers

That's easier, but then you can't tell if a mail was sent directly to
you _and_ the mailing list, or just the mailing list. Unless there's
an option to add the mailing list to 'reply-to', instead of replacing
it.

I was not aware of such issues... I personnaly don't care at all to know
if this is a reply to me and the mailing list or not...
well, in that case, I suppose the reply to all is the only way

Hi again,

I just modified the settings of the mailing-list, it now adds a
'Reply-To' field with the address of the mailing-list.
This means that if you just hit reply, your mail will only go to the
mailing-list, and if you hit 'reply-all' it will go to the ml AND the
original sender.

So if you were already using 'reply-all', no changes.

Doesn't seem so, at least for me. I'm using evolution and now both Reply
To and Reply to All send the mail to the mailing list only.
Not that I care too much about this thing, but I liked the previous
behavior a bit more since it's the most widely used across mailing lists
I'm following.
Is this evolution specific?

Filippo

Um, no.  Turn it off.

There's a reason why mailing lists don't do this.

No, seriously.  Turn this shit off.

If you want to leave it on, please explain to me why you want to
1) break the 'group reply' button on my mailer, and 2) break people's
legitimate usage of "Reply-To:".  Your "fix" breaks way more stuff
than it solves.
