abbreviation "best" in the source code

I see the term “best” in some of the code. Is this an abbreviation for something? (binary encoded stream? or _ _ stream?)

I'm not aware of any such abbreviation. Can you give some examples of
where you saw it used? Maybe it just meant "best", as in the best of
the available possibilities.
