gst-build 1.14 on Ubuntu 16.04 isn't working for me

David Ing
I tried to build gstreamer using gst-build on the 1.14 branch on Ubuntu 16.04 using the command: meson build && ninja -C build/

The full output is pasted at the end of this email, but to summarize I got this error:

Dependency libffi not found but it is available in a sub-subproject.
To use it in the current project, promote it by going in the project source
root and issuing the following command.

meson wrap promote subprojects/glib/subprojects/libffi.wrap
||Couldn't use fallback subproject in subprojects/libffi for the dependency libffi
||Reason: Subproject directory 'subprojects/libffi' does not exist and cannot be downloaded:
||No libffi.wrap found for 'subprojects/libffi'
|Couldn't use fallback subproject in subprojects/glib for the dependency glib-2.0
|Reason: subprojects/glib/meson.build:1551: Native dependency 'libffi' not found

subprojects/gstreamer/meson.build:386:0: ERROR:  Native dependency 'glib-2.0' not found

Next I tried to follow the given suggestion but no luck:

ing@ing-ub01:~/dev/github/gstreamer/gst-build$ meson wrap promote subprojects/glib/subprojects/libffi.wrap
Subproject libffi.wrap not found in directory tree.

I also tried `sudo apt-get install libffi-dev` but it didn't help either.

How can I make the build work?

Re: gst-build 1.14 on Ubuntu 16.04 isn't working for me

David Ing
Can anyone tell me why gst-build is failing (on the 1.14 branch).

In my last email, I was on Ubuntu 16.04.  This time I am on Mint 19 (equivalent to Ubuntu 18.04).  I am getting the same problem.

This is what I'm doing in the Linux terminal
ing@ing-ub01:~/github/gstreamer/gst-build$ meson wrap promote subprojects/glib/subprojects/libffi.wrap
Subproject libffi.wrap not found in directory tree.

But I can see that the file is in the directory tree, and the file contents are:
[wrap-git]
directory=libffi
revision=meson

Read the prior email for more context.

Re: gst-build 1.14 on Ubuntu 16.04 isn't working for me

Mathieu Duponchelle
Yes, that command just doesn't work, I am not really sure why it is recommended.

You can simply copy that file to your subprojects directory, and probably propose
a patch to add that wrap there upstream as well, I don't think there is any reason
not to.

On 08/20/2018 09:38 PM, David Ing wrote:

[wrap-git]
directory=libffi
revision=meson

Read the prior email for more context.

|Reason: subprojects/glib/meson.build:1551: Native dependency 'libffi' not found

subprojects/gstreamer/meson.build:386:0: ERROR:  Native dependency 'glib-2.0' not found

Next I tried to follow the given suggestion but no luck:

ing@ing-ub01:~/dev/github/gstreamer/gst-build$ meson wrap promote subprojects/glib/subprojects/libffi.wrap
Subproject libffi.wrap not found in directory tree.

I also tried `sudo apt-get install libffi-dev` but it didn't help either.

How can I make the build work?

Re: gst-build 1.14 on Ubuntu 16.04 isn't working for me

David Ing
Alright I got past the prior error with help from Mathieu by adding these steps ...
cp subprojects/glib/subprojects/libffi.wrap subprojects

... and some additional steps ...
cp subprojects/glib/subprojects/zlib.wrap subprojects
sudo apt install --yes libmount-dev libselinux-dev

... but my build is still screwed.  Here is a truncated version of my console output.

Any idea how to get past this one?  (I have never used Meson before.)

[wrap-git]
directory=libffi
revision=meson

Read the prior email for more context.

I tried to build gstreamer using gst-build on the 1.14 branch on Ubuntu 16.04 using the command: meson build && ninja -C build/

The full output is pasted at the end of this email, but to summarize I got this error:

Dependency libffi not found but it is available in a sub-subproject.
To use it in the current project, promote it by going in the project source
root and issuing the following command.

subprojects/gstreamer/meson.build:386:0: ERROR:  Native dependency 'glib-2.0' not found

Next I tried to follow the given suggestion but no luck:

ing@ing-ub01:~/dev/github/gstreamer/gst-build$ meson wrap promote subprojects/glib/subprojects/libffi.wrap
Subproject libffi.wrap not found in directory tree.

I also tried `sudo apt-get install libffi-dev` but it didn't help either.

How can I make the build work?

Re: gst-build 1.14 on Ubuntu 16.04 isn't working for me

David Ing
After Carl's suggestion I executed the following ...

sudo apt install --yes gobject-introspection libglib2.0-dev

... and I get further but I am now blocked by this error:

subprojects/gstreamer/gst/meson.build:272:4: ERROR:  gobject-introspection dependency was not found, gir cannot be generated.

Here is the full terminal output:

subprojects/gstreamer/gst/meson.build:272:4: ERROR:  gobject-introspection dependency was not found, gir cannot be generated.

But I just installed the gobject-introspection package.

I made sure to close the terminal and re-open it (in case I needed some new environment variables from the package install) but it didn't help.

Just a guess: go back to the beginning with the
gstreamer-1.14.2.tar.xz file.  You might have some meson-created files
that weren't updated, in your previous retry.

Re: gst-build 1.14 on Ubuntu 16.04 isn't working for me

David Ing
That was a good suggestion Carl but it didn't work.  I still get:
subprojects/gstreamer/gst/meson.build:272:4: ERROR:  gobject-introspection dependency was not found, gir cannot be generated.

This time around I did not need to copy stuff around the `subprojects` folder.  Presumably, the libraries that I installed (in the instructions below) got me around that part.'

BTW:  This markdown represents everything that I have done on my machine (starting from a brand new Linux system).

# Linux Mint Cinnamon Tara
Starting from a fresh install.

## Edit `~/.bashrc`
Put this at the bottom of the file.
```
# This is where pip3 installs `--user` executables (such as meson)
PATH=$PATH:$HOME/.local/bin
```

Restart the terminal.

## Install stuff
```
sudo apt update
sudo apt install --yes git python-pip python3-pip ninja-build build-essential snapd slack libmount-dev libselinux-dev gobject-introspection libglib2.0-dev
pip3 install setuptools wheel
pip3 install --user meson
```

## Clone and run `gst-build`

```
mkdir -p ~/github/gstreamer
cd ~/github/gstreamer
cd gst-build
mkdir build
# the following command fails:
meson build
# the following command is never executed because the prior command failed.
ninja -c build/
```

I followed your commands, I finished the meson stage, got into the ninja stage,
got this error:

Who knows?

I see you said
git clone https://github.com/GStreamer/gst-build.git -b 1.14
maybe git clone https://github.com/GStreamer/gst-build.git -b master
would be better.

Re: gst-build 1.14 on Ubuntu 16.04 isn't working for me

David Ing
I eventually got past the error ...

subprojects/gstreamer/gst/meson.build:261:2: ERROR:  gobject-introspection dependency was not found, gir cannot be generated.

... by doing this:

sudo apt install --yes libgirepository1.0-dev

Carl -- Maybe you had this library installed on your machine?

Now here are the steps that work:

# How to build Gstreamer using `gst-build 1.14` on Linux Mint Cinnamon Tara (19)
Starting from a fresh OS.

## Edit `~/.bashrc`
Put this at the bottom of the file.
```
# This is where pip3 installs `--user` executables (such as meson)
