MPEG MMTP Element

We are considering to develop MMT prototype system, but the trouble lies in not finding any open source MMTP stack even on FFmpeg/GStreamer website. MMT standard has been launched for 3 years, this month 2017 edition of MMT standard just rolled out and goes into publicity, Why not to see available open source implementation? Maybe it is large barrier to advocate adoption of MMT in digital broadcast network.

I'm not aware of any Open Source implementation for MMT either. If you
would write one and make it available to the community, that would
definitely be great.

Main reason for it not existing yet is probably that there is not much
usage of MMT in the industry yet, and many people being wary of using
(especially new) MPEG technology due to the usual patent uncertainties
and costs, and rather using other technologies instead.

We roughly have a basic plan to design and implement embedded MMTP stack for STB/DTV running over Android/Linux. As the first roadmap, we expect to implement MMT demuxer / MMTP protocol / basic singaling message leveraging FFmpeg's avformat capability as underlying container parser infrastructure. It is estimated that the goal I should be finished in 3 months submitted to community. After that we can consider to move on MMTP native plugin design on GStreamer community.

Hi Edward,

MMTP is entirely designed from the scratch to supersede existing RTP in many aspects (refer to standard itself for details), in particular its protocol behavior and packet structure is fully distinct from one with RTP. On the other hand MMT container along with signaling message sits on top of MMTP as flexible payload unit to allow MMTP agnostic to concrete media codec and container format. From perspective of implementation it is hard to find any point leveraging RTP element in community.

MY preliminary design idea for MMTP is drawn from active object pattern and FSM pattern in conjunction with high-volume event processor just like water pumping.
